Once you have set up your lean-to fire lay, you can place your bird's nest in the opening made from the propped up log. Then, you will light the bird’s nest on fire. It will catch your kindling pieces on fire, and then the larger fuel log that is holding the fire lay in place. As you place logs over the fire, be careful not to smother them.

Log Cabin Fire Lay

A log cabin fire lay is a simple crisscross style fire lay that has a teepee shape built inside of it. Your log cabin fire lay is not particularly tall, but it does offer plenty of fuel to keep it going for long periods of time. A well-built log cabin fire lay should last several hours, at least. While it is not enough for an overnight fire, it will get you plenty of warmth.
